I Went to Timbuctoo

When people are lost, or in the middle of nowhere, or very far away they will say they are in Timbuktu. It is a city in Mali, Africa, which is very far away if you are halfway around the world.

According to legend, an African miner in the area told other miners he was from Timbuktu. It is unknown if the town was named for him or because of him. It is high up from the Yuba River, where gold mining was established in 1850.

On to Grass Valley for some food. We found a place that sold pasty pies. These things are gigantic, hot, and delicious. I ordered a veggie one which was stuffed with cheese and broccoli.

The veggie pasty, so so good.

I wanted to see Rough and Ready, or at least a drive through the town. It was named after President Zachary Taylor.

Some people get a chuckle out of the name, and others don't believe that it is a real place.

Rough and Ready and Timbuctoo. Definitely some interesting town names up in Gold Country.
