Happy Earth Day

Do you have environmentality?

This is my recycle bin. Anything that can be recycled should be. Check with your local recycle center for a list of things that can be recycled. It's amazing all the items they will take! Not just cans and bottles, newspaper and plastic, some cities will recycle fabric like old clothes and sheets, hangers, styrofoam peanuts, juice bags and more! You should aim to have no more garbage than what could fit in your shoe box.

Using green cleaners is not only earth friendly, but also safer and healthier for people and animals. Citrus in place of harsh chemicals is a great alternative. These environmental cleaners are becoming mainstream and are carried in regular grocery and discount stores. They are also a lot more affordable than in the past.

Growing your own produce gives off oxygen, cleans the air, and saves money. Imagine going into your backyard and plucking a fresh lemon off the tree when you want one. Growing an avocado tree is one of the best choices of going green. In addition to growing your own fruits and vegetables, buying locally grown and shopping farmer's markets are excellent choices.

Composting is a great way to help the Earth. Even if you don't grow your own produce, many cities will accept donations to help grow city trees and flowers. Some things that can composted include:
*Fruit and vegetable skins, peels, seeds, cored, pits, stems - any part of the fruit or veggie you don't eat (and even parts you do)
*Egg shells
*Coffee grounds. Many Starbucks locations offer free bags of used coffee grounds to add to your home compost
*Dried flowers - after you enjoy a lovely boquet you may have received as a gift or simply bought yourself to enjoy, adding these to the compost will give the soil variety
*Grass mowings and other yard clippings
*Newspaper and cardboard. First shred and add a bit of water before mixing in
*Waste from vegetarian pets.

For a bigger list, check out some green websites.

Be a vegetarian or vegan. It not only saves the earth, it saves animals. With so many delicious vegetarian items and an endless amount of veg cookbooks it is easy once you get the hang of it. many restaurants are now offering vegetarian and vegan options now. Getting all the protein, vitamins and very little cholesterol, if any, it can also save YOUR life.

Using canvas bags instead of plastic will help save money and all the production and fuels needed to make new bags. Using totes made of canvas or bamboo to haul groceries and other purchases is an easy way to contribute. Most stores have cnavas bags and a lot of those stores offer incentives for using them, such as a bag credit or other chances at prizes or discounts.

There are so many ways to do your part to save the world we share. Wearing layers when it is cold instead of using the heater; using energy-efficient appliances and lightbulbs; turning off electronics when not in use and turning off lights when you leave the room; using rechargable batteries; taking your own cup to the coffee shop and use it instead of paper cups; buy from second hand shops; and so much more!
